A Journey Through the Fault Lines of Science
Lesson One is an independent research initiative that emerged from observations of suspected scientific misconduct and the institutional responses that followed. What began as a local experience gradually evolved into a broader investigation of how scientific systems respond to evidence, accountability, criticism, and the possibility of error.

While studying at Shiraz University, I encountered scientific results that appeared inconsistent with the reality they claimed to describe. Some experiments seemed never to have been conducted as reported. Some measurements appeared difficult or impossible to verify. In several cases, concerns were raised before publication, yet the publications proceeded.
What followed proved more consequential than the original allegations themselves.
The concerns were reported to authors, supervisors, journals, publishers, ethics committees, governmental bodies, and other institutions responsible for safeguarding research integrity. The responses of these actors gradually transformed the experience from a misconduct report into a broader case study of scientific correction.
The central question ceased to be whether individual violations had occurred. A more important question emerged:
What happens when a scientific system is confronted with credible warnings about possible misconduct?
Lesson One was created to explore that question.
Although inspired by events observed at Shiraz University, Lesson One is not primarily about a single university, a particular group of researchers, or an individual dispute. Rather, it examines how scientific systems respond to evidence, criticism, uncertainty, accountability, and the possibility of error.
The project combines documentation, case studies, conceptual analysis, and empirical research to investigate scientific misconduct, scientific correction, research integrity, and the institutional dynamics of scientific self-regulation.
At its core, Lesson One is an attempt to understand not only how scientific misconduct occurs, but how scientific systems react when they are given an opportunity to correct it.
A warning was raised before publication.
The warning was ignored.
The papers were published.
The concerns were reported to journals, publishers, ethics committees, ministries, regulators, and other institutions.
Years passed.
The most important question was no longer whether misconduct had occurred.
How does a scientific system respond when confronted with the possibility that something may be wrong?
Lesson One emerged from that question.
